| M.A. Art Practice | |
| I came to the M.A. after a lifetime working as a practicing designer in the arena of applied art, where it was a 'qualifier' for success that ideas were articulated and committed through well developed drawing and sketching skills. It was essential to express concepts and ideas as close to the finished article as possible in the painted media. | |
| I describe my self as an artist working as a designer. The M.A. is a return to painting, to develop myself as an artist, and my perspective through a greater study of Modernism in relation to previously held views on art. | |
| The basis of my work throughout the course has been about breaking down the drawing and painting skills I have developed over the years, in order to develop new ways of seeing and of putting work down. | |
| I have created some works within negotiated restrictions, e.g. working only in black and white on a large scale. These large drawings are based on early memory and are positioned in time by specific settings, and by objects, such as toys and other details. Each drawing defines a narrative of 'before and after' events. They are all linked, and explore notions of time. | |
| Following this, are works based on travel and on the British fascination with hierarchy in business, culture and heritage. | |
| My work is based on periods in time. I am interested in defining new ways of drawing and painting based on depicting moments in time from earliest memory, time spent travelling, and latterly in the struggles of the corporate world. I seek to define relationships and incidents. Things are about to happen, or have just happened. Is it safe? | |
