Personal statement

Memory and desire inform the context of my work. Narrative elements of the erotic and voyeurism remain from earlier concerns but now link to irony and fantasy. Decoration is used to form 'surface' and form a dialogue with illusions of depth that continue to determine interplay between 'layers'.
Some memories of the fair ground and freak show mingle with more recent interests in 'body theatre' and contempory dance. For some years now there has been a very active contempory dance scene in the UK producing a wide range of work - I have attended some major and some quite esoteric performances. Movement however does not interest me, as an approach to focus this interest I used shop window mannequins both complete and dismembered set in an installation of plastic sheets and illuminated with coloured light and projected shapes. I used colour and black and white photographs to record this together with manipulations via electronic media.
B&Q assisted with media, having a great range of spray can paint together with doilies and radiator grills that provided ready made stencils for surface pattern and texture.
At the time of writing (early May) I am no more than starting out and making false starts too often but by September I fully intend to have a new body of work for my show.
